Ref:
  1. CNASC Ltr: 13150 Ser AIR4.3.4/7.4629 Naval Air Systems Command implementation Plan for Nonchromated Paint Primer, of 18 April 2002
  2. Materials Engineering Laboratory Report, "Performance Specification Qualification of MTL-PRF-23377H Type I, Class N (Non-Chromate) Manufactured by Deft Coatings, Inc., PC-R-00I0. Code 4.9.72, Patuxent River, MD, January 2005
  3. Materials Engineering Laboratory Report. "Performance Specification Qualification of MIL-PR.F-23377H, Type 1, Class N (Non-Chromate) Manufactured by Hentzen Coatings, Inc", PC-R-00ll, Code 4.9.7.2, atuxent River, MD, January 2005
  4. Materials Engineering Laboratory Report. "Performance Specification Qualification of MIL-PRF-23377H, Type 11, Class N (Non-Chromate) Manufactured by Hentzen Coatings, Inc.", PC-R-0012, Code 4.9.7.2, Patuxent River MD, January 2005
  5. e)Materials Engineering Laboratory Report, "Limited Initial Evaluation of Fully Non-Chromated Coating Systems Utilizing Improved Non-Chrome Primers", LROO5_003 Code 4.9.7, Patuxent River, MD, February 10, 2005

  1. Reference (a) authorized the use of waterborne non-chromated primers qualified to Military Specification MIL-PRF-85582, Class N for depot applications involving scuff sand and over paint of the existing paint system for aircraft exterior surfaces, This decision was based on the cumulative results of both laboratory and field-testing cited in reference (a).
  2. References (b), (c), and (d) contain the results of qualification testing to MIL-PRF-23377 Class N for Deft, Inc. (Type I Product Code: (02GN083) and Hentzen Coatings (Type I Product Code: 16708TEP/16709CEH and Type II Product Code: 17176KEP/16709CEH), respectively. Solventborne non-chromated primers conforming to MIL-PRF-23377 Class N must meet the same critical performance requirements as those that conform to MLL-PRF85582. In addition, reference (c) contains the results of extended corrosion testing for these materials. The extended corrosion testing showed that the Hentzen and Deft non-chromated primers conforming to MIL-PRF-23377 Class N outperformed the waterborne non-chromated primer conforming to MIL-PRF-85582 Class N in both long-term neutral salt fog and Long- term acidified salt fog (SO2).
  3. Based on this data, NAVAIR extends the limited authorization n reference (a) to the use of the products described above. This limited authorization is identical to that designated for non-chromatedprimers in reference (a), and all restrictions, as described in paragraph 2 of reference (a) apply to these materials.
